Some people question the extent to which Jekyll and Hyde are in fact a single character. Until the end of the novel where they seems nothing alike. Stevenson used this marked contrast to make his point every human being contains opposite forces within him or her, an alter ego that hides behind ones polite facade.
Jekyll appears largely as moral and decent, engaging in charity work and enjoying a reputation as a courteous and genial man, he in fact never fully embodies virtue in the way that Hyde embodies evil.
"HE HAS TAKEN HIS OWN LIFE, IT IS HIS ATONEMENT"
OVERVIEW OF HYDE
- Represents the evil side to Jekyll's personality.
- Jekyll's alterego
- Physically smaller and younger than Jekyll
- Awakens terror and disgust in others
- His evil nature causes him to commit many crimes without feeling any guilt
- His power over Jekyll becomes so strong that Jekyll resorts to killing himself and Hyde in the process
I have chosen to recreate Hyde because I want to explore the more evil side to Jekyll/Hyde's personality, even though they are the same person. He is the focus of the story as it is about how he expresses his evil fantasies in a way unlike others. As he is described as a pre-human looking man, I thought it would be interesting to explore.
