BURNS

In this lesson we learnt how to use Gelatine to create burns. Notes: You can add colour and different materials such as rice or glitter, to the melted gelatine for texture. The gelatine can go straight on the skin and is easily removed. Gelatine can also be used to create moulds and can be moulded into cuts that aren't directly applied to the skin. You can stick them on. Hard edges can be melted with witch hazel or warm water. Gelatine should be dried with cool air so it doesn't melt and move around. You can pick at it with pins to create texture. To stop stickiness, powder over the gelatine with translucent powder.

HOW TO CREATE A BURN
  • Melt a piece of gelatine in the microwave for around 20 seconds
  • Use a spatula to apply the melted gelatine onto the area
  • Build it up to create the edges
  • Play around with it with a pin or the spatula to create texture and make it look more realistic
  • Dry it with cool air from a hair dryer
  • Hard edges can be removed with a small amount of witch hazel or warm water and a baby bud, like acetone, melt it backwards and forwards
  • Powder over the top when dry to stop stickiness
  • Stipple over the top of burn with colour and a stippling brush
  • Create blisters by dropping gelatine on skin
  • Give it a 3d look
  • Use a pin and put pus, wound filler and blood on the burn
  • Add more blood
  • Rub vaseline on top to make the burn shiny.
I was quite happy with how my burn looked although it took me a while to like the way it looked. At first I covered my models face with too much supracolour and it looked very unrealistic, although the face would go red with a burn on it, it just looked a bit silly. I also made a hole in the wound which wasn't intentional so I just filled it with woundfiller to make it look like a deeper park to the wound. I also went around the edges with supracolour and a thin brush to make the burn look more 3d. To improve next time, I would try not to put so much red around the actual wound and focus more on the inside of it. I would also add pus and different materials to layer and texture the wound.
